On February 17th, we celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day. This is an opportunity to promote and encourage acts of kindness in your school and community. Below are three simple ways you can celebrate this day with your students!
(1) Read a Poem or Book – Read a kindness poem or book about kindness! Have a discussion about how even ONE simple act of kindness can make a difference. Help students reflect and set goals for how they can be kind to others. They can record their goals or share their goals with the class! You can even make a class book with all of the student goal pages.
(2) Brainstorm Ideas – Have students brainstorm and write down random acts of kindness they can do for others. It can be something as simple as picking up trash in the schoolyard or holding the door open for someone. Have students share their ideas with the class.
(3) Classroom Kindness Challenge – Have a daily or weekly kindness challenge. Record random acts of kindness on popsicle sticks or cards. Each day, a designated “Kindness Kid” can choose a stick or card with a kindness challenge to try that day or week. You can even write the completed acts of kindness on strips of paper to create a classroom kindness chain. At the end of the year, students will be able to see how even the smallest acts of kindness can add up and make a difference!
