Description
Printable & Digital versions for Google™ Slides included
Do you use mentor texts in the classroom? Mentor texts are a highly effective method for introducing new skills and strategies. A great text for introducing the skill of identifying sensory language is Where Butterflies Grow by Joanne Ryder. This book is full of sensory language and descriptive words that connect to the five senses!
NOTE: If you’re teaching remotely, there are YouTube videos of the book being read that you can present and share with your students before guiding them through these activities. Just do a quick search using the mentor text title!
Many of the activities can be completed without the mentor text, as well. This resource will help students identify sensory words in a text and communicate which of the senses the words appeal to. There are ideas for anchor charts and materials for guiding students through the process of identifying sensory language in ANY text. You can incorporate the graphic organizer and word sorts in small groups, as partner work, or in literacy centers.
