The Best Graphic Novel Series for Younger Readers
Graphic novels have become an invaluable tool for elementary classrooms around the world. With colorful illustrations with silly and exciting narratives, these comic stories are enjoyable for all levels of readers, including struggling readers or those just beginning to develop their literacy skills.
For an introduction to graphic novels, I love to start with the Elephant & Piggie series or the Duck, Duck, Porcupine series. The stories are told through illustrations and speech/thought bubbles, exposing readers to the beginning graphic elements of graphic novels. The books included in these series include fun characters, humor, and engaging dialogue to engage young readers and help them develop a love for reading.
Once students have a basic understanding of graphic elements, they are ready for more traditional graphic novels that include detailed illustrations, sequential panels/frames, captions, and more complex dialogue. Series like Narwhal and Jelly by Ben Clanton and Unicorn and Yeti (Acorn collection) are perfect next steps. These early graphic novels are packed with humor, charm, and delightful artwork. The stories appeal to a broad audience while maintaining simple and repetitive language patterns perfect for beginners.
